  Dear I, Where Are You?

Everything about my future was ambiguously assumed。 I would get into debt by going to college, then I would be forced to get a job to pay off that debt, while still getting into more and more debt by buying a house and a car。 It seemed like a never-ending cycle that had no place for the possibility of a dream。

I want more—but not necessarily in the material sense of personal wealth and success。 I want more out of life。 I want a passion, a conceptual dream that wouldn’t let me sleep out of pure excitement。 I want to spring out of bed in the morning, rain or shine, and have that zest for life that seemed so intrinsic in early childhood。

We all have a dream。 It might be explicitly defined or just a vague idea, but most of us are so stuck in the muck of insecurity and self-doubt that we just dismiss it as unrealistic or too difficult to pursue。

We bee so fortable with the life that has been planned out for us by our parents, teachers, traditions, and societal norms that we feel that it’s stupid and unsafe to risk losing it for the small hope of achieving something that is more fulfilling。

“The policy of being too cautious is the greatest risk of all。” ~Jawaharlal Nehru

Taking a risk is still a risk。 We can, and will, fail。 Possibly many, many, many times。 But that is what makes it exciting for me。 That uncertainty can be viewed negatively, or it can empower us。

Failing is what makes us grow, it makes us stronger and more resilient to the aspects of life we have no control over。 The fear of failure, although, is what makes us stagnant and sad。 So even though I couldn’t see the future as clearly as before, I took the plunge in hopes that in the depths of fear and failure, I would e out feeling more alive than ever before。

If you feel lost, just take a deep breath and realize that being lost can be turning point of finding out who you truly are, and what you truly want to do。

Nothing succeeds like confidence。When you are truly confident,it radiates from you like sunlight, and attracts success to you like a magnet。

It's important to believe in yourself。Believe that you can do it under any circumstances, because if you believe you can, then you really will。The belief keeps you searching for answers, which means that pretty soon you will get them。

Confidence is more than an attitude。 It es from knowing exactly where you are going and exactly how you are going to get there。 It es from acting with integrity and confidence。It es from a strong sense of purpose。It es from a strong mitment to take responsibility, rather than just letting life happen。

One way to develop self-confidence is to do the thing you fear and to get a record of successful experiences behind you。

Confidence is passionate and understanding。It is not arrogant。 Arrogance is born out of fear and insecurity, while confidence es from strength and integrity。Confidence is not just believing you can do it。 Confidence is knowing you can do it。Know that you are capable of acplish anything you want, and live your life with confidence。

Anything can be achieved through focused, determined effort and self-confidence。If your life is not what you want it to be,you have the power to change it,and you must make the changes on a moment by moment basis。 Live your priorities。 Live with your goals and your plan of action。 Live each moment with your priorities in mind。 Act with your own purpose, and you will have the life you want。

Just for today I will try to live through this day only and not tackle my whole life problem at once。 I can do something for twelve hours that would appall me if I had to keep it up for a lifetime。

Just for today I will be happy。 This assumes to be true what Abraham Lincoln said, that "Most folks are as happy as they make up their minds to be。"

Just for today I will adjust myself to what is, and not try to adjust everything to my own desires。 I will take my "luck" as it es。

Just for today I will try to strengthen my mind。 I will study。 I will learn something useful。 I will not be a mental loafer。 I will read something that requires effort, thought and concentration。

Just for today I will exercise my soul in three ways。 I will do somebody a good turn and not get found out: If anybody knows of it, it will not count。 I will do at least two things I don't want to do—just for exercise。 I will not show anyone that my feelings are hurt: they may be hurt, but today I will not show it。

Just for today I will be agreeable。 I will look as well as I can, dress beingly, talk low, act courteously, criticize not one bit,and try not to improve or regulate anybody but myself。

Just for today I will have a program, I may not follow it exactly, but I will have it。 I will save myself from two pests: hurry and indecision。

Just for today I will have a quiet half hour all by myself and relax。 During this half hour, sometime, I will try to get a better perspective of my life。

Just for today I will be unafraid。 Especially I will not be afraid to enjoy what is beautiful, and to believe that as I give to the world, so the world will give to me。

The first day of school our professor introduced a little old lady to us。

"Why are you in college at such a young age?" I asked later。 She jokingly replied, " I'm here to meet a rich husband, get married, have a couple of children, and then retire and travel。"

"No seriously," I asked。 I was curious what may have motivatedher to be taking on this challenge at her age。 "I always dreamed of having a college education and now I'm getting one!" she told me。

We became instant friends。 Every day for the next three months we would leave class together and tolk nonstop。 I was always listening to this "time machine" as she shared her wisdom and experience with me。

At the end of the semester we invited Rose to make a speech to our football team。 I'll never forget what she taught us。 As she began to deliverher prepared speech, she dropped her note card on the floor。 A little embarrassed she simply said, "I'm sorry。 This whiskey is killing me! I'll never get my speech back in order so let me just tell you what I know。" As we laughed she cleared her throat and began:" We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing。 There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success。 You have to laugh and find humor every day。 You've got to have a dream。 When you lose your dreams, you die。 We have so many people walking around who are dead and don't even know it! There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up。 If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don't do one productive thing, you will turn twenty years old。 Anybody can grow older。 That doesn't take any talentor ab

ility。 The idea is to grow up by always finding the opportunity in change。 Have no regrets。 The elderly usually don't have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do。 The only people who fear death are those with regrets。"

At the year's end Rose finished the college degree。 One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep。 Over two thousand college students attended her funeral to honorthe wonderful woman who taught by example that it's never too late to be all you can possibly be。

  Dear friends:

If you can dream it, you can do it.——Walt Disney

It was a long four years. Even after I had actually graduated, the nightmares began to haunt me, the university would call to say I hadn’t truly graduated. There had been a mistake and there was just one more class I needed to take. I was always so relieved to wake up and realize that it had only been a bad dream. In reality, I had completed every course needed for my degree, and I was a full-fledged college graduate!

Now, the rest of my life loomed ahead of me. Sometimes a bachelor’s degree prepares you for a specific occupation——you train to be an accountant, you graduate and get a position in an accounting firm. Often, however, your stint in college only prepares you to make further decisions regarding your future. You’re pretty sure what you don’t want to do!

During my senior year of college, I had toyed with the idea of changing my major. At that point, I had finally discovered what captured my heart. But, wanting to finally be finishing school was a stronger pull. So, I took a few courses in physiology and exercise science, but not enough to receive a degree in physical therapy. That would require advanced schooling, beyond my bachelor’s degree——and I just wasn’tready to tackle that. Having completed my B.C. degree, I didn’t have any intentions of furthering my education.

So, I did the safe thing and got an office job——the very thing I was sure that I didn’t want to do! I detested the office policies, the suits I had to wear and the downtown environment that I had to drive to every day. I knew this was not where I belonged.

But god knew what path my career was to follow. A position opened up at the most exclusive health club in our city, so I applied. This was my kind of environment——an active, vibrant kind of place——completely at the opposite end of the spectrum from the office environment where I found myself. The position required that I work Saturday nights and Sunday mornings. Perfect, I thought! I could keep my office job Monday through Friday and work at my dream job on the weekends. This arrangement lasted several months until, eventually, a full-time position opened up and I was able to resign from my office job.

Over the next few years, I worked my way up the leader, gaining experience in several different departments. I found my niche as the director of member services——catering to our clientele and providing them with numerous cutting-edge programs. I would have stayed at that job forever——it seemed to be the pinnacle of all my dreams fulfilled. Here were fellow employees who had a passion for the same things that I did——health and fitness. Yet again, god had other plans for my life.Within two years, a newer, bigger, better and more state-of-the-art health club facility was built——just five miles down the road. And, in turn, the owner lost many members to that club. And, in turn, the owner lost thousands of dollars. One by one we were each laid off.

After trying unsuccessfully to land another similar position elsewhere, I knew what I had to do. Go back to school!thanks!
